How to play Bridge

Steps to Learn how to play Bridge

All the steps are accessible from these PDF files..............Simply, Click on the red PDF file icons below:-

These downloadable pdf files below hopefully will give even the total beginner an understanding of the card game, Bridge.

The files should best be read and internalised in the following order:-

The How to play Bridge pdf file should be read first as it is a top level view of the game of bridge.

The Beginnings of Bridge pdf file should be read second and internalised as it explains in more detail the card dealing, playing and trick generation.

The Starting the Bidding pdf file should be read third and internalised as it explains in more detail the Bidding process.

The Continuing with NT pdf file should be read fourth and internalised as it explains in more detail the concept of Balanced hand play in the form of No Trump (NT), as this is the most frequently dealt type of hand.

The Weak take out pdf file should be read fifth and internalised as it explains in more detail the concept of weak and strong Balanced & unBalanced hand play in the form of Trump or 3 No Trump (NT) response to a declarer during bidding.

The Simple Overcalls pdf file should be read sixth and internalised as it explains in more detail the concept of weak and strong Balanced & unBalanced hand play in the form of Trump or 3 No Trump (NT) response to a declarer during bidding.

The Stayman Convention pdf file should be read seventh and internalised is the first Artificial bid that everyone learns. An Artificial Bid is simply a bid that does not have the meaning of the denomination of the bid itself.  Stayman is an asking artificial bid. It allows us to get out of an initial NT bid and it allows us to find a fit in a Major, instead.

The Takeout Double pdf file should be read eigth and internalised, you need shortness in the bid suit, opening HCP points, and support for the majors. When we make a Takeout Double, we are TELLING our partner to bid to take out the double. Otherwise the opponents might get Double the score for their Contract! Even with 0 HCP they MUST bid.

The Preventive Bidding pdf file should be read ninth and internalised, Preemptive bids are simply jumping in the bidding to any level. There are occasions when we have hands that are weak in terms of HCP but we have a very long suit. In these circumstances we can use Preemptive bids to clog up the bidding space and cause issues for our opponents.

The Bridge course from start to finish pdf file should be read tenth and internalised as it re-visits and explains the nuts and bolts of bridge, so as to bring the reader from being someone who never played at all, up to that of a novice player.

The Bridge cheat sheet pdf file is best used when you already have an understanding of the rules of card trick play and you are moving into trying to understand the Bidding element of Bridge.

Following on after all of the above, we have found that learning through playing is one of the best ways solidify and properly internalise all the concepts gleamed from the proceeding pdf documents.

We use the free online bridge App from the Bridge Champ Platform. It can be found at the following URL:- http://beta.bridgechamp.com/#/game

On initial login to BridgeChamp, you will need to create an account with your email address and password of your choice. Thereafter, when signed in, we use the “Play now” option and the “CASUAL BOT GAME” option, where we play as a South partner with a North Bot against two East and West Bots. It is possible to look back at the bidding and rerun the game tricks at the end of each game to aid your learning process.

We hope you enjoy the learning process as much as we have.

These are 2 excellent free learning resources from https://www.nofearbridge.co.uk/ using the ACOL bidding system:- a Bridge Crib Sheet and a slightly more advanced Beginners Booklet in pdf file format.
